About the Recipe

Stroopwafels, a delightful Dutch treat, are thin waffle cookies with a gooey caramel syrup filling. The dough, made with yeast, flour, sugar, butter, and egg, is pressed into thin waffles and cooked until golden. The caramel syrup, infused with cinnamon, adds a sweet and aromatic touch. Stroopwafels are typically enjoyed by sandwiching the caramel filling between two warm waffle halves, creating a satisfying combination of crispy and chewy textures. These homemade treats are a beloved Dutch tradition, perfect for pairing with your favorite hot beverage.

Ingredients

For the Dough:

- 2 1/4 teaspoons active dry yeast

- 1/2 cup warm milk

- 1/4 cup granulated sugar

- 2 cups all-purpose flour

- 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted

- 1 large egg

For the Caramel Syrup Filling:

- 1 cup brown sugar, packed

- 1/2 cup unsalted butter

- 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon

Preparation

Making the Dough:

1. In a small bowl, dissolve the yeast in warm milk. Let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.

2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, melted butter, and egg. Pour in the yeast mixture and mix until a dough forms.

3. Knead the dough on a floured surface until it becomes smooth. Place it back in the bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise for about 1 hour or until it doubles in size.

Preparing the Caramel Syrup Filling:

1. In a saucepan over medium heat, melt the butter.

2. Add the brown sugar and ground cinnamon. Stir continuously until the sugar dissolves and the mixture becomes smooth.

Remove from heat and set aside.

Making the Stroopwafels:

1. Preheat a stroopwafel iron or a pizzelle press.

2. Divide the dough into small balls, about 1 inch in diameter.

3. Place a ball of dough on the preheated iron and close the lid. Cook for about 1-2 minutes or until the waffle is golden brown.

4. Remove the waffle from the iron and immediately cut it in half horizontally to create two thin waffle layers.

5. Spread a small amount of the caramel syrup filling on one of the waffle halves and top it with the other half.

6. Press the halves together gently, allowing the caramel to ooze out slightly.

7. Repeat the process with the remaining dough and filling.

8. Let the stroopwafels cool and the caramel to set before serving.

Enjoy these homemade Dutch stroopwafels with a warm cup of coffee or tea!
